General Fulton Language Requirement
Students pursuing a B.A. in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts must complete the equivalent of the 102 level in one language (except B.F.A. students). Students may fulfill the requirement via one of the following ways:
- At least three years of study of one foreign language in high school (students should send their high school transcripts to the registrar’s office).
- A combination of high school and college study; e.g. two years of high school foreign language study plus a 102-level college course in the same language (the CAPE Placement Evaluation is required to enroll in any 102-level course – see below for details).
- Completion with a passing grade of a 101- and a 102-level college course in one foreign language.

Language Placement Evaluation (CAPE)
General Information About the CAPE
SU’s Computer Adaptive Placement Exam (CAPE) establishes your level in a given foreign language and recommends the SU language course you should take based on your score. Taking the test is free and does not affect your GPA. You are allowed to take the Placement Exam only once.
The CAPE is currently available for French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Italian and Russian. It is proctored via Zoom and takes 20-30 minutes to complete. It focuses on grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. There are no sections that evaluate listening or speaking.
Note: If you take the recommended course (above 101) and receive at least a “C,” you may buyback the credits for SU lower-level courses (up to 12 credits). See below for information.

If you have earned at least a “C” in an SU language course above 101 and you do not already have credits for the lower-level classes, you are eligible to earn Credits Without Registration.
This means you can purchase at half rate up to 12 credits for the courses that are below the level of the language course you passed without taking these classes!
To start the buyback process or if you have any questions, please contact Mr. Dave Treber (datreber@salisbury.edu). Please provide your student ID and the list of courses you would like to purchase the credits for.
