Notification of Rights Under FERPA
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their educational records. An “eligible student” under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older or who attends a postsecondary institution.
The University may disclose, without consent, information that the institution has designated as Directory Information.
Salisbury University has designated the following as Directory Information:
- Permanent address
- Major field(s) of study
- Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
- Weight and height of athletic team members
- Dates (terms) of attendance
- Degrees and awards received
- Most recent previous educational agency or institution attended
- Listing of participation is official student organizations
Permitted Disclosure of Personally Identifiable Information
The University may disclose, without consent, information that the institution has designated as Directory information. See details above.
FERPA permits the disclosure of PII from students' education records, without consent of the student, if the disclosure meets certain conditions found in §99.31 of the FERPA regulations. §99.32 of FERPA regulations requires the institution to record the disclosure. Eligible students have a right to inspect and review the record of disclosures. A postsecondary institution may disclose PII from the education records without obtaining prior written consent of the student.
Students may select to disclose information to third parties by completing the online disclosure form found in their student GullNet account. Students will be required to provide a five-digit (no letters) pass code, which will then need to be shared with the individuals identified on this form and to whom the official is being allowed to disclose the education records specified.
Students who want more or less than the directory information listed above to be released without prior notification or consent should notify the Registrar's Office. Salisbury University does not sell or otherwise provide mailing lists of student information to anyone outside of the University.
The University Registrar is responsible for compiling and maintaining directory information.
