SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Ying Wu, professor of economics, has earned Salisbury University's 2026 Outstanding Research Mentor Award.

Presented at the 24th SU Student Research Conference (SUSRC), the honor celebrates faculty who are excellent supervisors of student research or creative work.

He was nominated by Drs. Christy Weer, dean of SU’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, and Leonard Arvi, chair of the Finance Department.

“Dr. Wu is a true scholar of economics who approaches his role as a professor with a deep commitment to both teaching and mentorship,” said Weer. “He not only teaches economic theory, but also guides students in analyzing and interpreting complex economic issues beyond the classroom.”

Wu has mentored more than 36 student researchers who have presented at the SUSRC, Southern Delmarva Economic Forecast, SU Summer Research Conference, and Posters on the Bay, with one student planning to submit work to the International Atlantic Economic Society (IAES), and has coached the SU College Fed Challenge Team.

“What distinguishes Professor Wu most clearly is not only the quantity or visibility of the projects he supervises, but the depth of his commitment to each student,” said Arvi. “He routinely devotes evenings, weekends, and summer time to support student research, meeting with them individually and in small groups to refine research questions, review data, and practice presentations.”

He has also published and presented over 140 scholarly works including books, journals, and national and international conferences.

“Professor Wu’s effectiveness as a mentor is reinforced by his own outstanding scholarly record,” said Arvi. “His accomplishments include prestigious external recognition and significant internal awards, which sends a powerful message to students about the value of sustained, high-quality research. He models for them what it means to be an engaged, impactful scholar.”

Wu’s accolades during his tenure at SU include being named a Fulbright Scholar and receiving SU’s Distinguished Faculty and Alumni Association Faculty Appreciation awards.

Student letters of support noted appreciation for his commitment to their future success.

“The success of students involves the dedication of talented and driven faculty like Dr. Wu that take personal pride in the success of their pupils,” noted one student. “The long hours he puts in to aid the success of his students goes above and beyond what is required of him as an educator, and it has had undeniable results on our education and our futures.”
