Online Learning Technical Requirements

General technical requirements for learning online in support of traditional, hybrid and virtual (remote and online) include:

  • A computer (PC or Mac) running a compatible web browser
  • A connection to high-speed Internet
  • Web-cam and microphone for remote virtual sessions
  • Speakers or headphones to hear audio from a computer
  • Virus protection software (updated regularly)

Additional technical requirements are available for MyClasses Canvas learning management system.

Some academic courses or programs may have additional technical requirements. Students should consult the syllabus or MyClasses course for any other requirements.

Note that some devices (like Chromebooks) or operating systems (like Windows 10 S) only allow installation from an app store, rather than from outside sources. For these devices, many of our applications like Respondus Lockdown Browser (which is used by SU faculty to do online testing) will not be able to be installed . Please keep this consideration in mind when shopping for a new device, and how you intend to use the device.

Expand the sections below for additional technical requirements for instructional software that might be required for completing and submitting course-related work as well as accessing course materials.
