Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Opens March 2

SALISBURY, MD---The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which opens at Salisbury State University this Friday, March 2, is that rare Broadway critter, a country western musical. Dolly Parton, who did the film version, made a hit of one of its songs, "Hard Candy Christmas."

Having fun in the pit is a six-piece country western band of students, faculty and townspeople including Robin Cockey on fiddle and Mike Weber on electric keyboard.

The show, which pokes fun at the 1970s, is credited by Women's Wear Daily, the fashion industry bible, with sparking the Texas fashion craze of the early 80s with its cowboy hats, fringe jackets and high boots.

The story is based on a real incident out of Texas history, the passing of the oldest continually operating brothel in the nation. It was called the "chicken ranch" because during the Depression, if men couldn't afford the $3 cost of a visit, the madam would accept poultry for payment.

Area theatre goers get a chance to see this 80s hit first, prior to the national touring production with Ann-Margaret later this year.

Performances are March 2-4 and 7-11 in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $10 general admission/ $8 seniors and students. Call the SSU Box Office at 410-543-6228 for reservations and information or visit the SSU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
