'Y Vote 2000'" Subject of Oct. 4 Lecture

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury State University Cultural Affairs Council sponsors the presentation "Y Vote 2000: Politics of a New Generation," a program created by Medill News Service and directed by Ellen Shearer, on Wednesday, October 4, at 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center on the SSU campus. The presentation is free and the public is invited to attend.

Shearer will discuss the "Y Vote 2000" project and the efforts it is using to reconnect young Americans with the political process by creating a new model for providing news on issues they care about in a manner they can relate to.

"We intend to talk to and listen to those young adults who are ignored by the pollsters, politicians and news media," said Shearer.

"Y Vote 2000" is comprised of two components: identifying and covering of the issues that are important to Americans aged 18-24, and creating and using better story-telling methods that will attract young adults to the campaign coverage of their issues.

Shearer is co-director Medill News Service/Medill Washington Program and associate professor Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Currently her principal endeavor is the "Y Vote 2000" project.

Medill News Service is the Washington program of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. It is undertaking the year-long campaign coverage project through a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts.
