WSCL Presents 10th Annual Celebration of Music May 21

SALISBURY, MD---Musical aficionados have reason to celebrate Saturday, May 21, when Salisbury University’s public radio station, WSCL, presents its 10th annual Celebration of Music at 7:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1401 Camden Avenue. This year’s festival spotlights 15 classical music performances including singers, pianists, a violinist, brass ensemble and a hand bell choir. They range from professionals who have appeared with nationally known orchestras and opera companies to some of the area’s most talented young musicians beginning their careers. Two are from Delaware, including tenor Michael Thompson of Dover, who has sung with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and soloist Matthew McLaughlin of Bethany Beach. The Salisbury area is represented by pianist Veronica Knier and her husband, Lee, interim conductor of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University. A trombonist, Lee has toured with Buddy DeFranco and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Other Salisbury artists include sopranos Beth Holder and Shiloh Wersen; the Carillon Bell Choir, Chancel Choir and Brass Ensemble of Asbury United Methodist Church, “Bach to the Future” founder Robert Young; violinist Richard Leavitt; vocalist James Andrews; Aude Goovaerts on recorder; and pianists Derek Wu and Kimberly Weber. Weber celebrates her 10th year with the Celebration. Other performers include trumpet player and SSO member Ron Davis of Parsonsburg, MD. Founded in connection with WSCL’s 10th anniversary in 1996, the Celebration of Music promotes classical music and regional musicians. This year’s performances will be recorded and broadcast on WSCL at a later date. The concert is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6985.
