Symphony Spring Concert May 11"

SALISBURY, MD---The Spring Concert of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury State University promises to provide not only an exceptional music program, but an opportunity to celebrate as the SSO welcomes longtime friends and performs special selections to mark its 15th anniversary.

The concert opens with Festique by M.L. Daniels, the piece that opened the SSO’s first concert 15 years ago. The 15th anniversary concert is dedicated to one of the orchestra’s charter members, violist Dr. Roger Jackson. And by coincidence, Dr. Jackson’s son, Dr. Peter Jackson, is the special guest conductor, having placed the $1,000 winning bid at the

Savor concert last month for the chance to lead the symphony in selections from Bizet’s Carmen, Suites No. 1 & 2.

Dr. Kevin Hekmatpanah, former principal cellist with the SSO and cello teacher at the University, is featured in the first half of the program performing Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in e minor, Op. 85.

Violist Margaret Motter Ward and clarinetist David Duree appear in the program’s second half on Max Bruch’s Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra, Op. 88. Variations on Happy Birthday by John Williams close this special performance for the symphony.

“Here we are, celebrating our 15th season. I consider that special,” said Dr. Thomas G. Elliot, conductor and music director of the SSO. “The fact that we’ll have so many friends and former associates participating, and so many longtime friends and supporters in the audience, makes it that much more personal to me.”

The Spring Concert takes place at 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, in Holloway Hall Auditorium at Salisbury State University. Gold Pass SSO patrons may use their passes for admission. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $8 for seniors 60 and above and students 18 and under. Tickets are available through any SWAC outlet (Peninsula Bank and Bank of Delmarva branches) or at the door the night of the concert.
