SU Hosts Islam Awareness Week March 31-April 4

SALISBURY, MD---A technology professional who works to develop youth leadership and an educator with a counseling background highlight the fourth annual Building Bridges: Islam Awareness Week, Monday-Friday, March 31-April 4, at Salisbury University.

Events begin with a screening of the film Prince Among Slaves 7 p.m. Monday, March 31, in Henson 103, hosted by the Muslim Student Association. This true story of an African prince enslaved in the American South made its Public Broadcasting Service television premiere in February.

Dan Mekled, co-founder and advisor of the Young Muslim Association at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, MI, speaks on “Muslim Heritage in the 21st Century” from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in Caruthers Auditorium.

A technology professional by trade, Mekled works to foster young Muslim leadership with a focus on organizational development, media relations, inter/intra-faith collaboration and teaching disciplines in project management according to Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge.

The presentation “Islam 101” is noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the Nanticoke Room, Guerrieri University Center. The session offers information on Islam and Muslims, followed by a question-and-answer period.

A panel discussion led by Nicole Correri is 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Caruthers Auditorium focusing on “Muslim Family Dynamics.” Correri holds degrees in psychology and counseling and has done doctoral studies in clinical psychology. She works with youth in the Washington, D.C., area, helping them make practical and meaningful connections to their spiritual lives.

Correri returns to campus at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall for a talk on “Islamic Family Values.” A reception with light refreshments immediately follows in the adjacent Social Room.
Events conclude Friday, April 4, with Congregational Prayer from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Spirituality Room.
The Muslim Students Association sponsors Islam Awareness Week, hosting an information table from noon-2 p.m. March 31-April 3 in the Commons.
