SU Art Faculty Discusses Unusual Book Materials May 9

SALISBURY, MD---Sally Molenda of Salisbury University’s Art Department presents “Unusual Materials in the History of Books” 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Art Institute and Gallery in Salisbury. The talk is part of a week-long “Book As Art” event that explores artists’ books.

Molenda discusses the unusual artistic elements and creative processes of artists’ books, which differ from mass produced books. She shares her fascination for books that utilize non-traditional materials such as fabric, glass, wood, leather, metal and even food.

At SU, Molenda teaches a book arts class that introduces students to handmade books as a sculptural medium and creative art form. A member of the SU faculty since 2000, she earned her Master of Fine Arts from George Washington University. She is a member of the Guild of Book Workers, a New York-based organization dedicated to the craft of books.

Sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, admission is free and the public is invited. Refreshments are served. For reservations call 410-546-4748. For a complete list of “Book As Art” events visit www.artinstituteandgallery.org/.
