SU Faculty Works Featured in Annual Art Exhibit

SALISBURY, MD---While Salisbury University’s annual faculty art exhibit, “From the Artist’s Hand II,” highlights works from new faculty members Rick Schneider and Nikki Vahle-Schneider, it also features works from returning faculty, many of whom are seasoned artists from the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond. They include Jeanne Anderton, Gary Brotman, Marie Cavallaro, Paul Flexner, Carl Goldhagen, James Hill, Marjorie Hill, Jinchul Kim, Sally Molenda, Margo Nolan, Pamela Olszewski, Dean Peterson, Brooke Rogers, Clytie Taylor, Frank Wright and Edward Brown. Anderton, a professional photographer since 1981 and president of CJZ Design and Photography, holds an M.F.A. from Syracuse University. She has exhibited at the Tartt Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Robert B. Menschel Photography Gallery at Syracuse University among others. Brotman, a Delaware resident and native of Baltimore, earned an M.F.A. at Indiana University. He has exhibited in past shows at SU, as well as the Art Institute & Gallery in Salisbury. Brown earned his M.F.A. in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. His solo exhibit sites have included the Mill River Gallery in Oella Mill, MD, and the Howard County Center for the Arts in Ellicott City, MD. He received the Individual Artist Award in Visual Arts from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2000. Cavallaro earned her M.F.A. credits equivalency through post-graduate study at the University of Delaware and Towson University. The president of the Clay Guild of the Eastern Shore, she has exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution and Rowe House Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. She is president and co-founder of the Cavallaro Cleary Visual Arts Foundation in Salisbury. Flexner began his art career as an illustrator and syndicated cartoonist for Philadelphia newspapers while earning an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art. Upon completing an M.F.A. at Penn State University in 1982, he began exhibiting his paintings in Philadelphia. Galleries featuring his work have included Kunsthaus Buhler Gallery in Stuttgart, Germany. Goldhagen earned his M.F.A. from the University of Maryland College Park. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Archer M. Huntington Gallery at the University of Texas at Austin and the Stinnes Corp. in New York. His one-person exhibition sites have included the Rosa Esman Gallery in New York and Atrium Gallery in St. Louis. His work has also been exhibited at the Raab Gallery in Berlin Germany and Turner Krull gallery in Los Angeles among others. James Hill, SU Art Department chair, earned his Ed.D.C.T. from the College of Teaching Art at Columbia University. A professional sculptor, his work is featured in public collections at the Chicago Art Institute and Albuquerque Art Museum in New Mexico among others. He has exhibited at several galleries, including the Esther Robles in Los Angeles and Arras in New York. Marjorie Hill earned her B.A. in fine arts from Montclair State College in Montclair, NJ,and M.S. in guidance and counseling from Southwest Missouri State University. A ceramics artist, she has exhibited at The Art Studio in Beaumont, TX, and the Art Institute & Gallery. Born in South Korea, Kim grew up in the suburbs of Seoul. As a Bachelor of Fine Arts student at King Sejong University, he won numerous art competitions. After moving to New York in 1986, he began focusing on mixed media and installation work. His American exhibition sites have included the So Hyun Gallery in New York City, the Perry House Gallery in Arlington, VA, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Molenda earned her M.F.A. in design from The George Washington University. She helped prepare materials for, construct and install Hiroshi Teshigahara’s environmental sculpture “enteringartnature” at the Kennedy Center. Locally, she has designed jewelry for the Peter Stone Co. USA Ltd. in Berlin, MD. Nolan earned her B.A. in secondary art education at the University of Maryland College Park. A former art teacher with Montgomery County Public Schools, she is a member of the National Association of Photography Teachers and the Maryland State Art Teachers Association. Olszewski earned her B.A. in studio art from Towson University and M.A. in instructional systems development with a concentration in art education from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She has exhibited in past shows at SU and served as art director for the Macintosh Group at Jands Inc. in Silver Spring, MD, as well as the graphic designer for Illustrations Unlimited Inc. near Washington, D.C. Peterson earned his M.F.A. in printmaking and drawing at Eastern Michigan University. At SU, he helped develop the Calumet Institute to offer master’s photographic workshops in the summer. He has exhibited in shows hosted by the Rensselaer County Council for the Arts in Troy, NY, and the British Consulate Cultural Center in Brazilia, Brazil. Rogers grew up in Ocean City, MD, where he still resides. Graduating from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute and College of Art in Baltimore, he maintains studios in Newark, DE; Maryland and Manhattan, NY. He has exhibited at the Century Gallery in Alexandria, Va., and most recently held a one-person exhibit, “Paint to Paper,” at SU’s Atrium Gallery. Taylor earned her M.F.A. at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Specializing in experimental photography, printmaking, papermaking and mixed media, she has illustrated textbooks for exceptional children and has showcased her work at shows throughout Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. A filmmaker, photographer, graphic designer and painter, Wright earned his M.A. in painting at the State University of New York, New Paltz. He has exhibited at galleries in that state, including the Albany Institute of History and Art and Queens Museum. The exhibit hangs in the University Gallery at Fulton Hall Tuesday-Sunday, September 2-19. An opening reception is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 2. Brown curates the exhibit. The gallery is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and from noon-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Sponsored by the SU Art Department and Charles R. and Martha N.
