SU Celebrates Homecoming Weekend October 14-17

SALISBURY, MD---From a student-led block party to a kayak paddle and wine tasting along Wicomico Creek, Salisbury University’s 2010 Homecoming Weekend is packed with excitement.

Events begin Thursday, October 14, with the annual faculty emeriti and retired staff luncheon from noon-2 p.m. in the Bistro of the Commons. (Admission to the luncheon is by invitation.)

Events continue Friday, October 15, with a Varsity Club-sponsored golf tournament at 10 a.m. at Nutters Crossing Golf Course. Entry fee is $65 per player, $240 per team. Pre-registration is required.

The Residence Hall Association’s annual powderpuff football game is 3:30 p.m. on the Holloway Hall Lawn.

A Taste of the Chesapeake dinner featuring the local band Folk Heroes is 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Commons. Cost is $10.67, $6.48 for children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under.

The SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts five new members during its annual banquet 6 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. They are: Sherry Esposito Stick (’00, cross country and track and field), Amy Fenzel-Mergott (’95, M’01, basketball and soccer), Joe High and Chris Turner (’00, men’s lacrosse), and Ben Madarang (’00, tennis). Admission is $30, $25 for past inductees. Pre-registration is required.

Saturday events begin with an open house at the Alumni House and Miller Garden from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The Bellavance Honors Program celebrates its 30th year with a brunch from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Bellavance Honors Center. Other reunions during the day include social work graduates at 2 p.m. in the Alumni House and executive M.B.A. graduates from 3-5 p.m. in the Social Room of Holloway Hall. Admission to the social work reunion is $10, $5 for children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under. Admission to the M.B.A. reunion is $10. Pre-registration is required.

A luncheon for alumni graduating prior to 1966 is 11 a.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons. Admission is $15, and pre-registration is required. The classes of 1930, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960 and 1965 will be honored.

Tours of the construction site for the new home of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, scheduled to open in fall 2011, are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Full-length pants and closed-toed shoes must be worn.

The Sea Gulls host Huntingdon College, AL, during this year’s Homecoming football game at noon. Admission is $5, $3 for non-SU students, $2 for children 12 and under. SU ID holders receive one ticket free. The Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving sponsors a hospitality tent from noon-4 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium. The SU Pep Band plays during the game.

A block party sponsored by the Student Government Association, with inflatables provided by the Student Organization for Activity Planning, is noon-4 p.m. at the Intramural Fields. During the event, the SU Army ROTC presents a drill and color guard team demonstration, physical training challenge, free food, prizes, and the chance to learn about the Military Science Program, including scholarships.

Adrenaline High, Inc. leads alumni on a kayak paddle on Wicomico Creek to the Bordeleau Winery at 1 p.m. The three-hour trip, guided by Stan Shedaker, includes a winery tour and tastings. Dave Gutoskey, director of housing and residence life, leads a tour of the recently renovated Pocomoke and Manokin residence halls at 4 p.m. Those interested should meet in front of Pocomoke Hall.

The Untouchables Dance Club performs in Henson Plaza at 4:30 p.m. as sports fans make their way back to main campus from the football game. The Multicultural Student Services Office hosts a post-game jazz social in the Gull’s Nest of the Guerrieri University Center from 4-8 p.m.

University Dining Services and the Cultural Affairs Office sponsor an Oktoberfest dinner from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Commons, featuring the faculty band Pugsly. Admission is $10.67, $6.48 for children ages 6-11, free for children 5 and under.

Alumni are invited to a concert featuring SU Department of Music faculty and blues musician Chris English 8 p.m. Saturday in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Joining him is SU’s African Drum Ensemble. A donation of $10 at the door is suggested. Contributions benefit the Department of Music Performing Arts Fund.

• 7 p.m. – Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz, Holloway Hall Auditorium. Admission is by ticket only. Free tickets are available at the Information Desk of the Guerrieri University Center (limit of two per person).

Throughout Homecoming, University Galleries presents the free exhibit “Relevance” in the University Gallery of Fulton Hall. The exhibit highlights the works of 13 contemporary artists and recent graduates of the Vermont College of Fine Arts M.F.A. in Visual Art Program. Gallery hours during Homecoming are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Blackwell Library holds its annual book sale throughout Homecoming Weekend. On Saturday-Sunday, the volleyball team also hosts the annual SU Tournament in Maggs Physical Activities Center. For more information visit the SU Athletics Web site at www.suseagulls.com.
