Restaurant, Retail Smart Start Courses Set November 11

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Small Business Development Center hosts two seminars Thursday, November 11, on the second floor of the Commons. One seminar, a “Restaurant Smart Start” session from 9 a.m.-noon, is specially tailored for the prospective or new-to-the-business restaurant owner/manager, although seasoned restaurateurs may find some new insights as well. The second seminar, “Retail Smart Start,” which runs from 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., covers issues concerning new retail owner/managers. The focus of the restaurant seminar is on important factors for success in a retail restaurant operation, including restaurant types, location/traffic access, managing perishable inventory, menu and price planning, vendor and employee relations, marketing, what constitutes true customer care in a food service establishment and more. The retail seminar addresses  factors common to success in a retail sales operation including: retail positioning, location/traffic access, managing various inventories, mark-up and profit calculations, vendor and employee relations, general and promotional marketing and customer service in a retail environment. The presenter for both is Casey Willson, a 30-year veteran of retailing, education and business in the Washington, DC metro area. Both courses do NOT cover the generic issues of starting a business, such as legal entity, licensing, tax registration, setting up books, etc., which are covered in the regular "Smart Start Your Business" seminars. The fee for each course is $25 and includes all materials. Registration deadline is November 8.  To register, call Terry Cohen at 410-543-6516, or email tecohen@salisbury.edu.
