Berry Published in On-line "Encyclopedia of the 1848 Revolutions

SALISBURY, MD--Three articles written by Dr. Robert Berry of the History Department at Salisbury State University have been published on-line in the "Encyclopedia of the 1848 Revolutions."

The project, headed by Professor James Chastain of Ohio University, has been several years in the making. Berry was asked to contribute articles on leading figures from Poland who played roles in the events of 1848-49 in Europe. His articles concern the activities of Prince Adam Czartoryski, Wladyslaw Zamoyski and Ludwik Zwierkowski.

Czartoryski, who had served as Russian Foreign Minister under Tsar Alexander I, was a leading figure in the 1830-31 Polish uprising against Russia. Forced into exile, Prince Adam settled in Paris where he organized and conducted a diplomacy-in-exile from his residence, the Hotel Lambert. Active for almost another 30 years, the Hotel Lambert played a major role in the development of Balkan nationalisms while striving to regain a separate Polish state.

During the 1848-49 revolutions he and his aides, including Zamoyski and Zwierkowski, provided valuable support to the Balkan nationalities, not only in their homelands, but also at the foreign offices in London and Paris. While Prince Adam coordinated the actions of the Hotel Lambert, Zamoyski served as his liaison in London, while Zwierkowski acted as his chief agent in Belgrade.

In addition to these articles Berry also has a book review of John Freely’s "Istanbul: The Imperial City" in the winter 1999 volume of "The Middle East Journal." He has recently submitted his review of Robert Olson’s "The Kurdish Question and Turkish-Iranian Relations From World War I to 1998" and Henri Barkey and Graham Fuller’s "Turkey’s Kurdish Question" for publication to that same journal.
