Requirements for Admission for the Medical Laboratory Science Program
To help you set your success in motion at SU, we want to share the process to prepare for, apply to, and be accepted into the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program:
- You’ve already completed the first step: being officially admitted to SU!
- Second, you must complete a separate admission process to begin the upper-division MLS courses. Space is limited, so admission to SU does not guarantee acceptance into the major. Students are eligible to begin the upper-division MLS courses in their junior year after admission to the MLS Program.
Admissions Procedure:
All students, including those currently enrolled at SU as well as transfer students, are considered on a competitive and space-available basis. Decisions regarding acceptance to MLS major are made based on the following:
- Cumulative GPA; the GPA of required prerequisite English, science and math courses; and previous medical lab experience (if any). Grades from all institutions attended will be considered and composite GPAs will be calculated.
- Overall judicial and academic records, including the number of outstanding prerequisites and the number of D, F, W and R grades on the transcript.
To be considered for admission to the upper division, current and prospective students must fulfill the following requirements:
- You must be admitted to SU in good standing and eligible to enroll for classes.
- All transcripts from previous academic institutions attended must be sent to and received by the Admissions Office and to the Medical Laboratory Science Program sufficiently ahead of time to allow for evaluation of transfer status.
- Prior to the fall semester in which you plan to begin the upper-division MLS courses, you must document enrollment in any outstanding prerequisite courses by June 15 and must document successful completion of all prerequisite coursework with all grades of C or better by August 15 prior to the fall semester.
- The prerequisite courses are: ENGL 103, BIOL 211, BIOL 215, BIOL 216, CHEM 121, CHEM 122, and MATH 155. Students with a D or F in any prerequisite course will automatically be waitlisted.
- Online lab courses for these prerequisites will generally NOT be accepted. Candidates for the MLS Program should discuss this with their advisors prior to enrolling in classes with online labs.
- You must review the Admissions Policy and the Essential Functions on our website and acknowledge on the application that you can meet the requirements outlined for successful completion of the degree. It is important to note that clinical internships are required to complete the degree.
- Hospitals will require documentation that you can physically complete the internship and are not a danger to yourself or others. You will have to document that you are capable and fit in various ways, including physical examinations, vaccinations, TB testing, drug/alcohol testing and criminal background checks. Further, some of these same activities are required for licensure in some states.
- You are financially responsible for physical examinations, vaccinations, TB tests, drug/alcohol testing, criminal background checks, transportation and any other expenses related to clinical internships.
- You must submit the Medical Laboratory Science Program Admissions Application form by March 1 of the spring semester (typically sophomore year) just prior to the desired fall semester entry (typically the junior year).
- Admissions decisions are made in time for fall class registration. Due to course sequencing, students can only begin the upper-division in the fall semester.
Full details about admission requirements and procedures are available on the Medical Laboratory Science Program website.
Applications from students who do not meet the above criteria will be archived and not considered until all of the above criteria are met. Admission will be revoked from students who falsify applications or do not appropriately document or complete outstanding admission requirements, and the space will be given to the next student on the waiting list. Students who have previously been admitted should consult with the MLS Program Director regarding readmission policies.
ASCP-certified medical laboratory technicians (MLT) and graduates of MLT programs with articulation agreements with SU should contact the MLS Program for additional information regarding advanced placement and admission. Applicants should note that this degree may not, by itself, be sufficient to become a licensed MLS in every state.
