This program will serve as an introduction into media literacy, explaining the elements included in “media,” examining participants’ media habits, and emphasizing the need for educated media consumption. This session includes a panel discussion, breakout workshops, and a closing reflection.

The goal of the program is to increase awareness of how linguistic choices made in television media, both and non-fiction, frame topics in particular ways that can persuade audiences to draw specific conclusions about pressing social and political issues.

This program will encourage participants to explore how their understanding of the past influences their perspectives on current events and issues and to question how their historical knowledge has been influenced—for better or for worse—by popular depictions of the historical world.

This program aims to help participants understand the U.S. and its role on the global stage, as represented in popular media, using film, television, music and news clips.
