SU to Host 'Five Wishes' Advance Directives Workshops

Five WishesSALISBURY, MD---Studies show only about half of adults in the United States have a document for directions on getting the care they want should they become seriously ill.

Developed by the national non-profit organization Aging With Dignity, Five Wishes is a legal document written in everyday language that allows adults to plan for those instances. Salisbury University’s Nursing Department presents two free Five Wishes advance directives workshops in August. Signup deadline is Tuesday, July 1.

The first workshop, “Understanding Advance Directives” on Saturday, August 9, guides participants through the Five Wishes program, through which they will learn how to prepare advance directives. The second, “Understanding Advance Directives for Chinese Americans” on Sunday, August 10, presents the same information in Chinese.

Both are 9:30-11 a.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons.

Participants may be asked to complete surveys prior to the workshops. Those attending are invited to join a survey study, and will receive a Five Wishes booklet and a $15 gift card for participating. Refreshments will be served. The workshops are open to those ages 18 and older. Family members are welcome to attend.
