SU Students Take Third in Annual Glass Games
SALISBURY, MD---The 2016 Olympics may be over, but that didn’t keep one team of Salisbury University students from bringing home the bronze.
Eleven SU hot glass students, led by Dr. Steven Durow, head of the Art Department’s Glass Program, recently demonstrated their artistic abilities and glass art knowledge — as well as their prowess at events such as “glass hole” (think cornhole, but with hot glass), during the annual Glass Games competition.
The SU team placed third in its first showing. Sponsored by the Glass Art Society, this year’s event was held at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA).
“It’s mostly a fun way to meet other people in their field, scout out graduate programs and compare themselves to peers in other programs,” said Durow.
Some 15 schools were represented at this year’s games, with some 120 students vying for hot glass glory in events such as “Tubular” (stretching a glass straw as far as possible down a hallway), “Elevated Gaffer” (teammates lifting a glass blower off the ground as he or she creates art) and “Animal” (creating quirky animals from small pieces of hot glass).
Only first-place Alfred University and second-place Ohio State University bested SU’s students. Winning teams took home glass trophies created by participating collegiate programs.
Other schools fielding teams at this year’s games included Bowling Green, Kent State and Ball State universities; the University of Wisconsin-River Falls; the College for Creative Studies (Michigan); CIA; the Columbus College of Art and Design; Centre College; Hocking College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College (Minnesota).
The 12-hour event culminated with a reception and awards ceremony, featuring demonstrations by professional artists from the Corning Museum of Glass.
Participating SU students included Alec Aita, Martina Callen, Emily Conner, Rainor Conner, Chris Foreman, Quinn Lemmon, Jake O’Neil, Rachel Price, Elena Taylor and Lola Wertz, accompanied by Durow and adjunct faculty Jon Rees.
