SU Student Health Services Celebrates Accreditation

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University Student Health Services has earned accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), marking the first such honor given to SU. The three-year accreditation is the highest awarded by AAAHC. Student Health Services provides primary and acute care to SU’s 6,800 students. SHS is staffed by two registered nurses and three nurse practitioners, assisted by the physician care of Emergency Service Associates Inc. They manage some 18,000 student visits students annually. SHS was one of the first primary care practices on the Eastern Shore to utilize nurse practitioners and remains a leader in nurse practitioner-based care, Berkman said. Only two other student health services offices in the University System of Maryland have such accreditation, the University of Maryland College Park and Frostburg State University. SU is the only Eastern Shore campus with an accredited student health services office. Status as an accredited organization means Student Health Services has passed a series of rigorous and nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care set by the AAAHC.  Over 1,300 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by the AAAHC. “Accreditation underscores our long-standing commitment to providing the highest possible levels of quality care to the community we serve,” said Berkman. “We are pleased and proud to have our efforts recognized with this accreditation.” For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
