SU Nursing Department Announces $80,000 CareFirst Scholarship Opportunity

SALISBURY, MD---Graduate students starting the master’s program in the Fall of 2011 in Salisbury University’s clinical nurse educator track have an opportunity to receive an $80,000 scholarship, thanks to CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.

The scholarship is part of $1.2 million in education-related stipends scheduled to be awarded to masters-level nursing students within three years through CareFirst’s Project RN II. The recipient must be committed to teaching in Maryland; Washington, D.C.; or northern Virginia.

An SU panel of nursing faculty will select the scholarship recipient based on:

• A reference from a previous nursing faculty member or a professional nursing colleague who is familiar with the applicant’s desire to teach and talents for teaching;

• All previous college transcripts; and

• An essay describing why the applicant is pursuing a career in nursing education, what he or she thinks makes an outstanding nurse educator and what he or she personally has to offer the next generation of nursing students (two pages maximum, 12-point font).

Prospective scholarship recipients must have applied and been accepted for admission to SU's graduate studies and to the graduate nursing program. The two-year scholarship will be awarded in increments at the end of each semester. The recipient must complete all graduate nursing coursework with a grade of B or better to qualify for scholarship reimbursement.

The application deadline is Wednesday, June 15. For application materials and more information e-mail Dr. Mary Parsons, director of graduate and second-degree programs, at mtparsons@salisbury.edu or call 410-543-6420.
