SSO Youth and Collegiate Orchestra Performs November 17

SALISBURY, MD---Prior to his first official concert as conductor of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University, Jeffrey Schoyen conducts a younger orchestra.

That group, the SSO Affiliated Youth and Collegiate Orchestra, presents its first concert under Schoyen 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The ensemble, a collection of students from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, performs Leroy Anderson’s “Lullaby of the Drums,” selections from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nactmusik and “Allegro,” Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Emperor Waltz,” Georges Bizet’s “Carillon,” Frederick Muller’s “Arkansas Traveler” and Johann Strauss Sr.’s “Radetsky March.”

Schoyen is no stranger to youth orchestra performances. He played in the Atlanta Youth Symphony during his formative musical years. That experience gave him the opportunity to work with many soloists who would come to perform with the "senior" Atlanta Symphony.

“It was incredibly beneficial for me,” he said.  “In a youth symphony you develop teamwork and other skills such as perseverance. The skills come in handy later in life, but at the same time you have fun and get to play some great music.”
