'Princeton Review' Names SU a Top Connected Campus in U.S.

SALISBURY, MD---When it comes to providing technology access for its students, The Princeton Review has placed Salisbury University in the top 20 percent of the 351 colleges and universities it calls the best in the nation.

A report recently released by the Review ranks Salisbury among the top three most connected campuses in Maryland. Only the University of Maryland Baltimore County (44) scored higher than SU (70). St. Mary’s College of Maryland tied at the 70th position. Others from Maryland included the University of Maryland College Park (183), Johns Hopkins University (183) and the U.S. Naval Academy (84).

Rankings are based primarily on the computer-to-student ratio and total number of computers on campus. Salisbury also has a higher-than-average number of “smart” classrooms, wired with Internet and projection services (75 percent). The national average is 30 percent.

“The significant investment SU has made in technology over the past several years has led to this recognition and contributed greatly toward the development of the technology culture on campus, said Jerome Waldron, chief information officer.

Along with providing 255 computers in eight laboratories for students, SU’s Information Technology Services Office offers Internet access at some 7,000 sites on campus and services some 10,000 student and faculty e-mail addresses.

According to a spring 2003 survey, 93.3 percent of SU’s students own a personal computer, and 92.8 percent have personal Internet access. Some 69 percent use the campus computer labs, and 87.6 percent rank their computer literacy as average or above.
