Meekins Published in 'The Dragon Lode'

SALISBURY, MD---The most recent edition of The Dragon Lode, a juried publication of the Children’s Literature and Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association, features an article co-authored by Drs. Amy Stephens Meekins and John T. Wolinski, professors of education at Salisbury University.

Entitled “Formula Fiction: Seldom Recommended – Widely Read,” the article provides an overview of formula fiction, also referred to as series fiction, and notes popular titles throughout the years such as The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift adventures, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew, as well as historical reactions to this genre.  The article also includes a summary of an informal survey of faculty conducted at Salisbury University.

As a part of this survey, faculty were asked if they read formula or series fiction as children and if so, to identify the specific series they read. Several faculty members added comments to their survey responses regarding fond memories of these reading experiences. Quotes from faculty members are also included in the article.

Meekins is a regular presenter at local, state, regional, and national conferences.  Prior to her appointment at Salisbury University, she was a classroom teacher and art specialist for Dorchester County Public Schools. She and Wolinski have coauthored several articles addressing reading/language arts issues. Meekins resides in Cambridge with her husband and son.
