MHEC Announces Distinguished Scholar Transfer Program

SALISBURY, MD---The Maryland Higher Education Commission launches the Distinguished Scholar Community College Transfer Program, which will award a scholarship of $3,000 per academic year to a student who is transferring from a Maryland community college to a Maryland four-year institution.

The scholarship may be applied to tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, books and supplies.  The award is in addition to any other State scholarships for which the student may qualify. This award is renewable for one additional year provided that the recipient continues to meet all eligibility requirements and maintains an annual 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent Grade Point Average.

To be eligible the applicant must be a Maryland resident (if dependent, parents must also be Maryland residents), have completed at least 60 credit hours by the start of the 2006 fall semester, have a Maryland community college transcript indicating an overall academic grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent grade point average, attend a Maryland 4-year institution of higher education as a full-time undergraduate student and apply for the scholarship within one year of completing the required credit hours or an associate degree program from a Maryland community college.

Those interested must submit an application available on the MHEC Web site (www.mhec.state.md.us) and provide all required documents to the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at the Maryland Higher Education Commission by March 1, 2006, to be considered for awards beginning in September 2006.
