Film Screenings Memorialize Artist Frida Kahlo

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, despite struggles with polio and a male-dominated art establishment, became one of the most acclaimed and influential painters of her generation.

class=""MsoNormal"">Salisbury University offers the community a chance to learn more about this powerful woman in October with screenings of two films: Frida and The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo, both in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. The films feature the voice and music of renowned Mexican vocalist Lila Downs, who performs at SU Thursday, October 27.

class=""MsoNormal"">PBS’ 2005 documentary The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo explores the artist’s life and how her paintings helped capture the culture and spirit of the first half of the 20th century. The documentary includes archival photos and film clips, showing the parallels between Kahlo’s culture and the work she left behind upon her death in 1954. Screenings are 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, and Monday, October 31.

class=""MsoNormal"">Salma Hayek stars as the artist in 2002’s Frida, a biographical drama focusing on Kahlo’s relationship with husband and fellow artist Diego Rivera, played by Alfred Molina. The film explores her personal life of constant illness as well her influence upon the worlds of art and politics. She was uncompromising in her world views: equality and honesty being of the utmost importance.
