Faculty Receive Grants Totaling $12,500

SALISBURY, MD----The Salisbury State University Foundation board of directors recently presented $12,500 to faculty members for professional development activities.

Dr. James Welsh of the Department of English was awarded $500 toward his submission of his paper and organization of a panel of papers on Thomas Jefferson for the national conference of American Presidency on Film in California sponsored by the Film and History League and the journal of Film & History.

Dr. Liddell Madden of the Department of Social Work was awarded $250 toward research and production costs for his monograph, Vulnerable Populations on the Delmarva: A Social Work Perspective, for use by social work practitioners, educators and students.

James Berkman of the Department of Athletics and coach of  the men’s lacrosse team and women’s soccer team was awarded $750 toward expenses incurred while attending the National Coaches Meeting in Orlando, FL.

Dr. Maarten Pereboom of the Department of History and associate dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts was awarded $800 toward production costs of his book The Free Press and International Politics: Coverage of the German Problem in Britain, France and the United States, 1919-1941.

Dr. Melanie Perreault of the Department of History was awarded $700 toward expenses incurred when presenting her paper, "Waterways in the Atlantic World: Contact and Cultural Negotiation Across a Liquid Landscape," at the international Transatlantic Studies Conference in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Dr. Steven M. Hetzler of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $600 toward his presentation of papers at the Joint American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America meetings in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Homer Austin of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward the presentation of his paper, "The Central Limit Theorem: Its History and Proof," at the Mathematical Association of American and the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans.

Dr. Harel Barzilai of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward the presentation of his paper, "Fostering Active Engagement and Learning in College Algebra Through Modeling, Groupwork and Applications," at the joint national meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematic Society in New Orleans.

Dr. E. Lee May of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward his participation in the joint 2001 annual meetings of the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America in New Orleans.

Dr. Mike Bardzell of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward presentation of his paper "Groups, Fractal Patterns and the Dynamics of Cellular Automata" at the 2001 joint meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans.

Dr. Barbara Wainwright of the of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward presentation of the paper "A Needs Assessment Survey" at the 2001 joint meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans.

Dr. Kathleen Shannon of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward presentation of the paper "PascalGT: Conjectures, Explorations, and Reasoning in Abstract Algebra" at the 2001 joint meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans.

Dr. David L. Parker of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was awarded $800 toward his paper presentation and attendance at the Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group Computer Science Education annual meetings in Charlotte, NC.

Dr. E. Eugene Williams of the Department of Biology was awarded $700 toward his participation in the 2001 annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Kimberly Hunter of the Department of Biology was awarded $800 toward her research comparing genetic diversity of newly discovered populations of the threatened Seabeach Amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) to that of historic populations that are stored in the Natural History Museum in Philadelphia.

Voncelia Brown of the Department of Nursing was awarded $800 toward her attendance at the Association of Community Health Nurse Educator’s spring institute in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Robert Settle of the Department of Management and Marketing was awarded $500 toward his presentation of his paper "Reluctance to Return Goods as an Impediment to Direct Purchasing" at the 12th annual Direct Marketing Educators’ Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Pamela Alreck of the Department of Management and Marketing was awarded $500 for presentation of the paper "Gender Differences in Perceptions, Catalog, Internet and Store Shopping" at the 12th annual Direct Marketing Educators’ Conference in New Orleans.
