SU's Modlin Named Among List of Influential Marylanders by 'The Daily Record'

SALISBURY, MD---For more than a decade, Eli Modlin has been an integral part of the Salisbury University community, emerging as a student leader with the Class of 2016, then returning to take on a key role in SU’s administration just months after receiving his diploma.
During that time, he has helped his Alma Mater grow in stature not just on the Eastern Shore, but throughout the state.
The Daily Record and BridgeTower Media recently recognized Modlin’s commitment to SU and the greater community, naming him to its 20th-anniversary list of Influential Marylanders.
“From his time as a student to his longstanding service to campus, Eli has exemplified what it means to be a proud SU Sea Gull,” said SU President Carolyn Ringer Lepre. “Working with state and local leaders, students, faculty, staff, alumni, members of the greater community, and many other others, doesn’t just tell the SU story; he embodies it and makes others want to be a part of it, as well.”
Joining SU’s administration as deputy chief of staff and director of government and community relations, first in an interim capacity in 2016, then permanently in 2017, Modlin quickly became a familiar face in Annapolis, engaging with lawmakers and other state and local community leaders on behalf of SU. He also bolstered community relations, overseeing the University’s Town-Gown Council.
In 2019, he was promoted to chief of staff. In that role, he coordinated the University’s comprehensive COVID-19 response in 2020, placing SU at the forefront of the University System of Maryland in areas including safety, operations, and service to students.
While retaining his chief of staff position and duties, Modlin was appointed SU’s inaugural vice president of public affairs and strategic initiatives in 2023, charged with overseeing the University’s marketing and communications areas, and developing external partnership and messaging opportunities. In addition, he provides administrative oversight for SU’s Athletics and Enrollment Management departments.
In the past two years, Modlin has played a vital role in expanding the University’s statewide reach through high-profile partnerships with NASA, the Maryland Army National Guard, the Washington Commanders, the Baltimore Orioles, and others. These collaborations help SU provide unique educational and engagement opportunities that can set Salisbury students apart from their peers early in their careers.
Prior to joining SU, Modlin held positions with the Comptroller of Maryland, including public affairs officer and special liaison officer.
Beyond SU, he serves as chair of the board for Leadership Maryland (Class of 2019); vice-chair of the board of directors for his alma mater, Mount Saint Joseph High School; and treasurer of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation. He also is on the boards of directors for the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development, Inc.
The Daily Record’s Influential Marylanders award was created in 2006 to honor those who have made significant impacts in their field and continue to be leaders in the state. This year’s 61 honorees will be recognized during a celebration in September.
