SU's Zimmer Performs 'A Concert of Patriotic Music' September 6

SALISBURY, MD---Sunday, September 6, at 4 p.m., St. Peter’s Episcopal Church hosts “A Concert of Patriotic Music” performed by four distinguished organists: Dr. Michael Stefanek, director of music ministries at Asbury United Methodist Church; Susan Zimmer, director of music at Wicomico Presbyterian Church and adjunct instructor and staff accompanist at Salisbury University; Taylor Harvey, music director emeritus at Asbury and St. Peter’s first church musician in residence; and Daniel Cherrix, music director at St. Peter’s.

Because of social distancing, the number of seats available is limited and masks are required. Free tickets are available online.
    
The concert will also be live streamed from the St. Peter’s Facebook page. Although admissions is free, good will donations are gratefully accepted.

Stefanek has his doctoral degree in organ performance and literature from the University of Michigan and Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. An award-winning member of the American Guild of Organists, he was recently appointed dean of its Salisbury Chapter.

Zimmer has served her church for over 30 years and SU students nearly that long. She holds Masters of Music from Boston University’s School of Fine Arts, and Yale University’s School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. Her bachelor’s is from Texas Tech.  She has played in organ recitals and collaborative keyboard performances across the U.S.

Harvey, for over a quarter century at Asbury, managed one of the most vibrant and exciting church music programs on the Eastern Shore. During his tenure there, St. Peter’s and Asbury’s choirs made three joint trips to the National Cathedral to sing Evensong.A graduate of the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, “His name is synonymous with artistic excellence,” said Cherrix.

Cherrix’s father’s family is from the Eastern Shore, but he was born and raised in North Carolina. Previous professional positions included associate organist and choir master at St. Luke’s’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta and minister of music and organist at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.Cherrix has worked in building bridges to music programs throughout the area, including SU. He was the prime mover in the founding of the St. Cecilia’s Guild at St. Peter’s, which presented a vibrant season of music last year, prior to the Pandemic.

“If this concert of patriotic music is what audiences want, watch out!” said St. Peter’s rector, Fr. David Michaud.“This might become a Delmarva tradition!”
