SU Celebrates Faculty and Staff Successes

Holloway HallSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates the following recent faculty and staff successes:

Dr. Stuart Hamilton, associate professor of geography and geosciences and Geographic Information Systems Management program director, recently co-authored the article “Mangroves Shelter Coastal Economic Activity from Cyclones” in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Co-authored with researchers from East Carolina and Colorado State universities, the article provided evidence to suggest mangrove forests helps protect coastal communities from economic loss during tropical storms on a global scale, highlighting the need for conservation of those forests.

Mike Koval, associate professor of accounting and legal studies, has been named a finalist for this year’s Charles M. Hewitt Master Teacher competition, scheduled during the Academy of Legal Studies in Business’ annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in August.

“You’ve Been Chopped! Energize Those End-of-Term Student Presentations with some Friendly Competition” is Koval’s second finalist entry in the competition, which highlights innovations in classroom teaching. He won the title in 2012 with his presentation “Step Away from the Syllabus: Engaging Students on the First Day of Legal Environment.”

Ron Dziwenka, adjunct professor of history and study abroad advisor for SU’s Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach Center for International Education, organized the 2019 International Academic Conference for Taekwondo (iACT), “Overcoming the Self to Benefit the World,” at Stanford University.

The president of iACT, he also presented a paper at the conference, “A Grand Theory of Practice: from Process to Praxis to Intuition,” analyzing how practice in martial arts, physical education, bodily awareness, East Asian philosophy and meditation may align with one another.

A recipe by John Lakatosh, University Dining Services executive chef, earned an honorable mention in the national Mrs. T’s Pierogies College and University Recipe Contest. His entry, “Mrs. T’s Pierogi with Tomatoes and Basil,” paired the main ingredient with traditional Italian ingredients. The dish will be featured on “cycle” menus in SU’s Commons dining hall.
