Requirements for Admission – Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

To help you set your success in motion at SU, we want to share the process to prepare for, apply to and be accepted into our Nursing Program:

  • You’ve already completed the first step: being officially admitted to SU!
  • Second, you must complete the steps below (generally during your sophomore year) to be considered for acceptance into the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. This step is a competitive process and is based on the evaluation of your overall qualifications by the School of Nursing Student Policies Committee. Please note, admission to SU does not guarantee acceptance to the Nursing Program.

Admissions Procedure:

All students are considered on a competitive and space-available basis. To be considered for admission to upper-division nursing courses (generally beginning in the fall of your junior year), current and prospective students must:

  • Complete, or have a plan to successfully complete, all nursing prerequisite coursework prior to the beginning of the program.
    • The nursing prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) that must be successfully completed PRIOR to beginning required nursing courses are: BIOL 211 - Microbiology and lab, BIOL 215 - Anatomy and Physiology I and lab, BIOL 216 - Anatomy and Physiology II and lab, HLSC 255 - Nutrition for the Health Sciences, HLSC 301 - Pathophysiology and lab (with a C or better), CHEM 121 - General Chemistry I and lab, CHEM 122 – General Chemistry II and lab, and PSYC 200 - Developmental Psychology.
    • Additionally, MATH 155 – Statistics, must be completed prior to second semester nursing courses. It is highly recommended that this course is completed prior to beginning the nursing program.
    • Successful completion of 1 of the following courses: SOCI 101 - Introduction to Sociology, SOCI 201 - Social Problems, or CADR 200 – Foundations of Conflict and Conflict Resolution.
    • Generally, more competitive students have a minimum cumulative grade point average for previous academic work of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • International students must demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
  • Complete the Application for the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program directly in the Nursing Centralized Application Service (CAS) at www.nursingcas.org. First consideration for program acceptance will be given to applicants who have submitted required application materials in their entirety by January 15 prior to the fall start date.
  • Visit the SU School of Nursing website for updated information: www.salisbury.edu/nursing

Decisions regarding acceptance into the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program for first consideration applicants are generally communicated before the end of March prior to the fall start date. Applicants who are accepted to the program must successfully complete all prerequisite coursework prior to the start of the Nursing Program. In addition, official transcripts for coursework completed outside SU after program acceptance must be submitted to SU prior to the start of the Nursing Program to guarantee a seat in the program.
