The Vision

A Landmark for the Performing Arts

The State of Maryland recognizes the strategic importance of accessible, affordable higher education for the economic development of the state and future success of its residents. As part of this commitment, the State has supported the development of dedicated facilities for music, theatre, and dance departments at almost all University System of Maryland (USM) campuses.

Among USM institutions that offer performing arts curricula — and as the sole institution offering a performing arts program on the Eastern Shore — Salisbury University is the only campus that does not have a dedicated building to support its Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. This absence of purpose-built facilities limit SU's ability to attract prospective students, constrain opportunities for current students to grow artistically and professionally, and restricts the scope of creative experiences the University can share with the surrounding community.

Each semester, SU offers more than 100 cultural events that are open to the public. A dedicated facility for the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will significantly expand these opportunities by providing a flexible venue available to community partners throughout the year. This aligns with the City of Salisbury's vision for arts and entertainment as a catalyst for economic development while also complementing the more intimate performance spaces and dining destinations that contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Salisbury.
