Arterial Stiffness: It’s Influence on Cardiovascular Disease and Therapeutic Interventions

Arterial stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and one of the best predictors for future cardiovascular events. Often confused with atherosclerosis, arterial stiffness is a separate vascular pathology, creating unique cardiovascular consequences. When the arterial walls become compromised there is a change in the structural proteins resulting in a stiffer phenotype. Overtime, stiffer arteries will have a detrimental impact on left ventricular afterload and myocardial perfusion, stimulating left ventricular hypertrophy and congestive heart failure. This webinar explained the physiological significance of arterial stiffness, how to analyze it, and the factors promoting it. Current therapeutic approaches focusing on exercise recommendations, dietary modifications, and pharmacological interventions as also addressed.
