Bio

I have been teaching for science since 1987. I started my career after completing a dual degree program at the University of Maryland College Park with a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Secondary Science Education. At first I taught middle school life science and physical science. Eventually, I switched to teaching high school chemistry and, along the way, I earned my Master's in Education. I have been at Salisbury University since 2001, teaching general chemistry and organic chemistry laboratory. While the curricular content hasn't changed much over the years, the students have! And, it's the students who make it worth while.

Teaching Philosophy

As a general chemistry lab instructor, I believe that students should be active participants in their learning. I enjoy working with college-age students, sharing with them my knowledge and laboratory technique. I provide my students with the tools necessary to excel in lab and I believe that the skills they learn in chemistry lab will serve them well in their careers and life after college. Developing time management skills, learning to be accountable to a deadline and planning a project are lab experiences that go beyond chemistry and impact facets of all careers.

I believe that students deserve timely feedback and I strive to return lab reports weekly. I also provide assistance with specific laboratory techniques during lab and gauge my response and level of help with a particular student’s desire to be challenged. I do not believe chemistry should be overly frustrating and, therefore, will intervene to ensure that students have a positive experience in lab. Most of the time my students get good results.

Service Activities and Community Relations

I teach a G.E.D. preparation class at the local jail and, sometimes, at the state prison which is nearby. I do this as a way to give back to my community.

I participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count and Project Feederwatch which are organized by the Audubon Society and Cornell University's Ornithology Department. During these annual studies, people from all over the world count birds and the data are used by scientists to track the health of bird populations. Birding is a hobby of mine and I enjoy participating in "citizen science."
