Karen A. Treber
Karen A. Treber joined the Office of the General Counsel in March 2017. Prior to joining Salisbury, Karen served as General Counsel at Frostburg State University for 20 years, as well as University Counsel at University of Maryland University College. Prior to her work in higher education, Ms. Treber served as in-house counsel at several corporations in the Washington, DC area, where she practiced corporate and securities law. She received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College and a J.D. from George Washington University.
Ms. Treber is the recipient of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Aware for Extraordinary Public Service to the University and the Greater Community. She provides advice and council on topics such as compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, student affairs, employee and faculty concerns, contracts and grants, and international operations and litigation. She also conducts workshops and seminars for University faculty and personnel on legal issues relevant to their areas.
Assistant General Counsel
Kia Chandler joined the Office of the General Counsel in December 2017. She holds an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and a J.D. from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law. Kia previously served as the Managing Attorney of The Chandler Law Firm, LLC which primarily provided legal services in the areas of Civil Litigation, as well as Family and Juvenile Law. She has served as a Contract Attorney for Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett & Scherr, LLP providing legal counsel to Boards of Education and Superintendents throughout Maryland on a variety of School Law issues. Additionally, she has served as a Legal Assistant at the White House, Office of Administration, Office of the General Counsel; as a Law Clerk for a Circuit Court Judge in Denver, Colorado; and in the civil litigation practice group for the Denver based law firm Hall & Evans, LLC.
In an effort to ensure equal access to legal services, Kia has served as a Volunteer Attorney for Maryland Volunteer Legal Services and Civil Justice, Inc. representing individuals in Family Law and Foreclosure Litigation. Her passion for education has led her to serve on various committees and panels in Anne Arundel County’s Public School System, and as a member of the Board of Visitors for Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
