Sustainability
From LEED-certified buildings to acclaimed environmental programs, Salisbury University is a national leader in campus sustainability. Its location on Maryland’s Eastern Shore makes it a great place to learn about – and help protect – ecosystems from wetlands to woodlands. On campus, students have championed initiatives from special gardens and energy-saving practices to outreach programs and even an apiary through SU’s unique Green Fund program. It’s no wonder The Princeton Review has named SU among the most sustainable universities in the U.S. since 2010!
Maroon and Gold...And Green!
Starting with its then-innovative campus recycling program in 1990 (which has grown to include more than 50 percent of all waste on campus), SU has been on the cutting edge of sustainable practices.
Green Fund: Supporting Your Ideas
Our students spoke – and we listened! In 2015, SU’s Student Government Association proposed a new fee to promote sustainable efforts on campus. The resulting Green Fund has led to picnic benches on campus with solar-powered device charging outlets, among other projects, all through student-led projects. Learn how you can submit your idea for funding.
Academic Degrees of (and in) Sustainability
We may have some of the Eastern Shore’s most sustainable buildings, but it’s what happening in our classrooms that is really making a difference.

SU’s sustainability initiatives impact practically every part of campus. We’ve compiled an overview an of sustainability initiatives and milestones for several areas on campus:
It Takes a Village: Sustainability Committees
At SU, sustainability is everyone’s responsibility – but we do have guidance. The University Sustainability Committee and University Academic Sustainability Committee make policy recommendations to help ensure we’re being as green as possible every day.
Award-Winning Efforts
When it comes to sustainability, we think we’re doing pretty well – but don’t just take our word for it! SU has earned many accolades for it environmental leadership, including the Maryland Department of the Environment Green Registry Leadership Award, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Green People Loving and Nurturing Trees (PLANT) Award and WMDT/Mountaire Farms Environmental Star Award. We also were the inaugural home for The Nature Generation’s Green Earth Book Awards.
Memberships and Affiliations
We can’t do it alone! SU’s partners in sustainability include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partnership, Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, Maryland Department of the Environment Green Registry and Second Nature.
