Waste Management

The Office of Environmental Safety manages the disposal of hazardous wastes for the campus community. Our goal is to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, while minimizing disposal costs to the institution.

General Guidelines

  1. Hazardous waste should not be placed in areas accessible by the general public (e.g. hallways, restrooms, stairways, outside buildings, loading docks, parking lots or in open motor vehicles).
  2. All hazardous waste that has been designated for disposal must be segregated from chemicals in use and be placed in a safe, but conspicuous location. Do not place hazardous waste in a location where it could be mistaken for ordinary trash and accidentally disposed of by Housekeeping personnel.

Labeling Hazardous Waste Containers

  1. Every hazardous waste container must be tagged or labeled properly. Each waste container must be indelibly labeled with the following:
    1. The exact chemical contents preceded by the word "Waste" (e.g. Waste Ethanol, Waste Hydrochloric Acid, etc.) Generic identifications such as "Waste Solvents", Waste Pesticides, etc. are unacceptable. If wastes are in solution, the solvent must be identified even if the solvent is water. Labels must not contain abbreviations, chemical formulas or trade names.
    2. The estimated chemical concentrations (% by weight) of the wastes in the container.
    3. The name of the generator or contact person.
    4. The date waste was initially placed into the container. When a waste is moved from a Satellite Accumulation Area to the 90 Day Accumulation Area, the original date will be deleted and the date the waste was moved to the 90 Day Accumulation Area will be applied.
  2. If the waste is packaged in its original container without any other wastes and the exact chemical contents are listed on the label under "Ingredients", the only additional labeling normally required will be the words "Hazardous Waste", the accumulation start date, and the name of the generator or contact person.

Chemical Waste Disposal

  1. No hazardous chemicals shall be placed in domestic waste containers (dumpsters, trash cans, etc.), evaporated in a fume hood, poured down drains, rinsed down sanitary sewers or in any other way released to the environment.
  2. The Environmental Safety Office facilitates disposal of hazardous chemical waste. To request waste pick-up, complete a Hazardous Chemical Waste Pick-up Request form and email the completed form to
