Anti-Gender Violence Subject of April 4 Lecture"  

SALISBURY, MD---One of America's leading anti-sexist male activists and a leader in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, Jackson Katz, speaks at Salisbury State University Wednesday, April 4, at 2 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

He presents his multi-media lecture “Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity.” The event is free and the public is invited. 

Katz explains how mainstream media images--e.g. sports, television, Hollywood film and music video--help to promote violent masculinity as a cultural norm. The presentation explores the way in which individual lives and the health of a community are affected by acceptance of male violence. Both negative and positive images are included. 

Former all-star football player, Katz was the first man at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to earn a minor in women’s studies. He later earned a Master of Education from Harvard University. 

He is a member of the U.S. Secretary of Defense's Task Force on Domestic Violence in the military and since 1996 has been directing the first gender violence prevention program in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. The U.S. Navy also is piloting his program aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. 

The departments of Psychology and Communication Arts, SSU Gender Studies Program, Fulton School Visiting Speakers and Artists Fund, and the Office of Student Affairs sponsor the event.
