Philosophy Symposium Addresses Responses to Evil" 

SALISBURY, MD---"Evil: What are Good Responses To It?" is the question addressed by Salisbury State University's 23rd annual Philosophy Symposium on Saturday, April 7. Featuring guest speakers and SSU panelists, the Symposium begins at 9:30 a.m. in Devilbiss Hall Auditorium.

The daylong event looks at the more obvious examples of the horrors that have haunted our previous century, from the Holocaust to the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, but also the more subtle forms of victimization.

"What we hope to discover," said Dr. Fran Kane of the SSU Philosophy Department, "are some possible responses to violence that transcend the cycle of revenge. Recent experiments with Truth Commissions might serve as a hopeful sign."

The morning session is followed by an afternoon panel discussion between SSU faculty and audience. Guest philosophers/speakers are Dr. Janice McLane from Morgan State University and Dr. Wayne Froman from George Mason University. SSU panel members are Drs. Jerome Miller, moderator, and Dr. James Hatley of the Philosophy Department, Robert Smith of the Communication Arts Department, and Dr. Diane Illig of the Sociology Department.

The event is free and open to the public. A continental breakfast will be served beginning at 9 a.m. and lunch in the Commons will be provided for all attendees.

The Philosophy Department, which has the largest number of majors of any campus in the University System of Maryland, will hold an evening reception for philosophy alumni and friends on Friday, April 6.
