SU Professors Published in Children's Literature Journal

SALISBURY, MD---Drs. John T. Wolinski and Amy S. Meekins, professors of education at SU were published recently in The Dragon Lode, a juried journal by the International Reading Association Children’s Literature and Reading Special Interest Group. Their article, Formula Fiction: Seldom Recommended-Widely Read, provides an overview of formula fiction, also referred to as series fiction, and notes popular titles throughout the years such as The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift Adventures, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew as well as historical reactions to this genre.

The article also includes a summary of an informal survey of faculty conducted at SU. As part of this survey, faculty were asked if they read formula/series fiction as youth and if so, to identify the specific series they read. Ninety-two faculty members responded to the survey with 81.5 percent of the respondents were The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Several faculty members added comments regarding their fond memories of these reading experiences. Quotes from several are also included in the article.

Wolinski and Meekins have co-authored several articles addressing reading and language arts issues. Wolinski is also a regular presenter at local, state, regional, and national conferences. He resides in Ocean Pines with his wife, Robin, and daughter, Krysten Sarah.
