SU Classes Will Start Wednesday

 

 

Tuesday, January 26 - 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday, January 27: The spring semester officially begins with the first day of classes.   Residence Hall Move-in continues until 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday).  All students, faculty, staff and visitors are urged to continue to use caution when traveling to campus.

 

Monday, January 25 - 2 p.m.

Tuesday, January 26:  The Salisbury University campus reopens although classes will not be held.  Residence Hall Move-in is scheduled from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Liberal leave policy is in effect for non-essential personnel. Those wishing to use liberal leave must notify their supervisors.

Wednesday, January 27: The spring semester officially begins with the first day of classes.

Students also may move into their residence halls until 8 p.m. tonight (Monday).  Although many travel bans have been lifted, cleanup continues from Winter Storm Jonas.  Please continue to use caution when driving and walking.

 

Sunday, January 24 - 1:30 p.m.

Due to record snow falls in parts of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic where many Salisbury University students reside, and still dangerous secondary roads on the Eastern Shore, the campus will remain closed on Monday, January 25. Classes will begin on Wednesday, January 27.

Below is the current schedule:

• Sunday, January 24: Campus closed. Essential personnel report to work.
• Monday, January 25: Campus closed and no classes. Essential personnel report to work.
• Tuesday, January 26: Campus reopens but classes are canceled. Residence Hall Move-in is scheduled from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Liberal leave policy is in effect for non-essential personnel. Those wishing to use liberal leave must notify their supervisors.
• Wednesday, January 27: Campus open with first day of classes.

These precautions have been taken to give students more time to return safely to SU following the storm. The spring semester will officially begin on Wednesday, January 27. Students may move into their residence halls until 8 p.m. tonight (Sunday) or between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Again, please use caution when traveling.

 

Friday, January 22 - Noon

Due to the impending winter storm and our concern for the safety of students, faculty, staff, families and others, Salisbury University has established the following schedule:

• Friday, January 22 – SU will close at 2 p.m.
• Saturday, January 23 – SU closed. No Move-in.
• Sunday, January 24 – SU closed. Move-in is scheduled from noon-8 p.m. (for those who can safely travel).
• Monday, January 25 – SU open. Classes canceled. Move-in is scheduled from 8 a.m-8 p.m.
• Tuesday, January 26 – SU open. First day of classes. 

Because some Winter Session classes and exams may be affected by this afternoon’s early closing, students should check with their professors regarding alternative arrangements.

Only essential personnel should report when campus is closed. Liberal leave will be in effect for non-essential personnel on Monday.  

For those residence students already on campus, University Dining Services will operate in the Commons with limited hours. Other campus facilities will be closed. Residence Hall staff will provide information regarding activities, including meals. Many orientation events will be rescheduled during the spring semester. All vehicles should be moved to the Parking Garage by 3 p.m. Friday to help facilitate snow removal on main campus. 

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning remains in effect for areas including Wicomico County from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. Two to six inches of snow are predicted, mixed with sleet, rain and wind gusts up to 45MPH. 

The University serves a wide geographical area, with many students and parents traveling from areas likely to be more significantly impacted by the storm. The local forecast, as well as conditions in other places, have influenced decisions about campus operations.  Please make safety your top priority when choosing to return to campus.

• Satellites close at 3 p.m.
• Commons open for dinner 5-7:30 p.m.

Saturday – Commons open
• Breakfast – 8-9 a.m.
• Lunch – 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
• Dinner – 5-7 p.m.

Sunday – Commons open
• Brunch - 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
• Dinner 4:30-8 p.m.

With Governor Larry Hogan’s state of emergency continuing, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to take precautions and stay off the roads once snow begins. 

Power outages are expected from windy conditions.  Suggested items for emergency kits include water, non-perishable foods, flashlights (not candles), battery powered radios, extra batteries, first aid supplies and medications. 

Please use caution when traveling to and from campus throughout the weekend and into next week.  Roadways and sidewalks may be hazardous. 

Those who must drive on snow- or ice-covered roads are encouraged to decrease speed and leave plenty of room for stopping; brake gently to avoid skidding; keep lights and windshield clean; avoid cruise control; and be especially careful on overpasses, secondary roads and bridges (which freeze first or may close).  Gas tanks should be kept filled. 

Those who are outside should dress appropriately; move with caution; assume wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery; get traction from rubber or grooved soles; use vehicles for support when entering or exiting; and use grassy edges of snow- or ice-covered surfaces. 

Other safety tips from MEMA include:
• Keep devices charged to follow weather and local emergency information and be able to contact family and friends.
• Be cautious shoveling snow or ice. Take breaks and stay hydrated.
• If you must travel, have car chargers, kitty litter or sand for traction, and extra drinks and snacks in case you get stuck. Advise others of your route and expected arrival time.
• Check on friends, neighbors and relatives.
• Be prepared for moderate coastal flooding and waves.
• Know whom to contact in the case of a power outage.

On campus, contact University Police at 410-543-6222 to report any emergency situations. Off campus, please call 911. 

 

Thursday, January 21 - 4 p.m.

Governor Larry Hogan has issued a state of emergency for Maryland from 7 a.m. Friday, January 22, until 7 a.m. Sunday, January 24, in preparation for the winter storm. 

The storm’s impact is predicted to be heavier west of our region. At this time, Friday’s classes will continue as scheduled. Students taking winter session courses should check with their instructors about any changes to exams. A decision about Monday’s classes will occur later this weekend.

Residential students arriving today (Thursday, January 21) will be permitted to move into their rooms until midnight. All other students should remain off campus until the state of emergency has been lifted.

Orientation activities are postponed. Students living in residence halls will be offered in-building programs and activities, and food service will be provided. Athletics events and other campus activities may be curtailed.

The campus is considered officially open for employees, however, please continue to watch the SU website and the SU Facebook and Twitter pages for updated information.

 

Thursday, January 21 - 1 p.m.

Salisbury University is closely monitoring storm conditions.  Even at this late date, the track of tomorrow’s storm is unclear in the Salisbury area.  It is apparent, though, that the region, including Salisbury may see a significant weather event.  Your safety is top priority.  Please monitor weather conditions and make careful decisions about travel.   With that in mind, we have a few important messages and we encourage you to monitor the SU website for updates and additional information. 

Students new to SU: The orientation schedule is being revised to reflect the weather conditions.  The most important topics will be duplicated once classes start, so please do not feel you need to risk your safety to attend an orientation program. 

Students living on campus: The Housing and Residence Life Office is currently open for students who wish to arrive ahead of the approaching storm.  Please take advantage of this opportunity, but parents and family members should also factor in return travel.

Students living off campus: Please check in with your landlord to make sure they are ready to receive you. 

Students currently participating in Winter Session: Friday is the last day; classes and finals are still planned.

Wednesday, January 20 - 12:30 p.m.

A hazardous weather outlook remains in effect for the region, including the Lower Eastern Shore and Wicomico County.

To ease travel safety concerns, new and returning students who will be living on campus may move-in to their residence halls early from 1-6 p.m. Thursday, January 21. 

Currently, all other New Student Orientation activities for freshmen and transfers are still scheduled for Friday and Saturday. This could change, however.

Regardless of when you choose to come to campus for orientation or the start of classes, please monitor weather conditions and use your best judgment in traveling.        

 

Tuesday, January 19 - 4:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for several areas including the Lower Eastern Shore and Wicomico County. The storm system is expected to impact the region on Friday-Saturday, January 22-23. Two to four inches of snow and rain are currently predicted for our area, with heavier precipitation in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. corridor. 

At this time, the University is operating under normal conditions. All New Student Orientation activities for freshmen and transfers are scheduled as planned including New Student Move-In on Friday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. This could change, however.

If students who will be living on campus wish to make alternative move-in arrangements to avoid hazardous travel, they may contact the Housing and Residence Life Office at 410-543-6040 between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
