MHEC-SAC Report Praises SU Advising Program

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s student advising program ranks among the best in Maryland, according to a recent report from the Maryland Higher Education Commission Student Advisory Council (MHEC-SAC).

Compiling data from students and advising offices at four-year higher education institutions in Maryland, members of the SAC offered a comparison of advising programs. The resulting report ranked three institutions – SU, St. Mary’s College and the University of Maryland College Park – as the state’s most effective.

SU received no recommendations for improvement.

“Essentially, the academic advising program at Salisbury University is excellent and should not be changed,” the report said.

A major component of SU’s advising success has been its commitment to students, said SU’s SAC representative, Darren Jackson.

“SU is totally student-oriented,” he said.

Unlike some schools ranking lower in the report, SU assigns each student an advisor/mentor during freshman year. These advisors remain with the student throughout the his or her time at the University. An emphasis is placed on a personal understanding of each student’s needs.

“It comes down to having one person for each student,” Jackson said.

SU offers advising in academic and career planning, as well as personal development.
