SSO Coordinator Presents 'Musical Journeys' Lecture

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury Symphony Orchestra coordinator Derek Bowden presents “Musical Journeys Across the American Landscape” 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. The lecture discusses the American identity, sense of place and landscape through national anthems and compositions by artists such as Aaron Copland and Charles Ives. Copland, a 20th century composer, used folk tunes from the South and West to create true American “classical” music. Ives used folk tunes and hymns to recreate the landscape of his New England childhood. Bowden discusses how these acts helped the country move from a generalized, idealistic American landscape to a more intimate sense of place. Admission is free and the public is invited. “Musical Journeys” is sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Programs. For more information call 410-543-6271.
