Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I know which SU catalog to use?

Students entering SU as freshmen or as a transfer student from any schools other than Maryland schools must use the SU catalog of the year they enter.  Transfer students from Maryland colleges may use a SU catalog from when they were matriculated students at the college so long as it is no more than seven years back from their anticipated date of graduation.  All students may choose to move to a newer catalog.

  2. If I’m majoring in ACCT, BUAD, ECON, FINA, INFO, MGMT or MKTG, may I also minor in one of the other areas of the Perdue School?

Students majoring in ACCT, BUAD, FINA, INFO, MGMT or MKTG may minor in all areas except BUAD and MKTG.  Students majoring in ECON may minor in ACCT, BUAD, FINA, INFO, or MKTG.

  3. Am I in the Perdue School of Business as soon as I am admitted to SU?  If not, how and when do I apply?

Students who indicate on their admission forms that the want to major in ACCT, BUAD, FINA, INFO, MGMT or MKTG are classified as Pre-business (pre-professional) students in the Perdue School until such time as they complete a group of required lower division business core courses—typically by the end of the sophomore year.  At that point the students must apply for admission to one of the upper division (professional) areas.  This is done through the office of the Advising Services Coordinator for the Perdue School.  Economics majors are admitted directly into the major and have no additional admission requirements.
  4. What are the professional program admission requirements?

Students must have 56 credits and have a 2.6 GPA in the lower division (pre-professional) business core with no "D" grades in this area to be admitted.  They may repeat courses one time to achieve the 2.6 GPA for admission.  Further, no student may take junior/senior-level ACCT, BUAD, FINA, INFO, MGMT or MKTG courses until he/she has been admitted.

  5. May I repeat a course elsewhere to improve an SU grade?

No.  Students needing to repeat an SU class must repeat that course at SU.  The new grade is the only grade counted in the GPA.

  6. May I take courses elsewhere and have them count toward my major/degree at SU?

Students must take junior/senior-level courses and 30 of their last 37 credits at SU.  They may take free electives, General Education courses, and lower division business courses elsewhere with pre-approval from the Advising Services Coordinator. Under exceptional circumstances, students may take up to 6 credits of junior/senior-level courses from an AACSB-member school with pre-approval from the Perdue School.

  7. Why are some transfer courses only counted as electives instead of being credited toward my major?

All courses transferred to SU must be substantially the same as courses offered at SU to be counted toward specific requirements.  The Admissions Office makes this determination with the help of the academic department(s).  Courses taken at the freshman/sophomore-level cannot be accepted as equivalent to junior/senior-level courses.  However, the Admissions Office will apply these as elective credits, so they still count toward the 120 credits required for graduation.

  8. When must I apply for graduation and have a degree audit done?

Students must apply for graduation the semester prior to the semester in which they intend to graduate.  At that time, a graduation audit is done by the Faculty Advisor and reviewed with the student.

  9. If I earn an Accounting degree, will I have all the courses needed to sit for the CPA exam?

Yes, but 150 credits are required in Maryland.  Please contact the Department of Accounting and Legal Studies for further information.

  10. How do I get admitted to an MBA program?

Students wishing to study at an institution other than SU must contact the prospective school directly.  Students wishing to go to SU should contact the Director of the Perdue School MBA program for a packet of information, application, etc. (www.salisbury.edu/mba)
