"Whitehead Presents Presidential Gestures Research"

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. George Whitehead, professor of psychology at Salisbury State University, recently presented research with Dr. Stephanie Smith of the University of Indiana, Northwest at the 47th annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Atlanta, GA.

The research, "The Use of Hand Gestures and Smiles in the Inaugural Addresses of U.S. Presidents," confirmed the argument that in public, speakers use more hand gestures than smiles. They also found more smiling by presidents during the more recent inaugural addresses. Whitehead and Smith speculate the difference may reflect television’s impact. The research will be published in The Journal of Social Psychology.
