Town-Gown Dialogue Wednesday, March 2
SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Town-Gown Council hosts a Community Dialogue on Wednesday, March 2, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons. The public is cordially invited; refreshments will be served.
Topics for the evening include the progress of President Janet Dudley-Eshbach’s Partners for Progress Initiatives, launched in February 2004. Issues are expected to center on economic impact and development, housing and neighborhood relations, and cultural affairs.
“Living in a university town has both advantages and disadvantages for residents,” said Dr. Maarten Pereboom, chair of the Town-Gown Council and host for the evening. “In addressing problems and concerns as well as opportunities for collaboration, we hope to advance the community in a realistic, intelligent and constructive way.”
Participating Town-Gown Council representatives include Stephanie T. Willey, president of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce and an area resident; Dr. Carol Williamson, SU vice president of student affairs and a resident of the Camden Avenue neighborhood; Kerrie Bunting, an SU alumnus and area resident; Brian Milsted, a student leader who lives in the Camden neighborhood; and Dr. Memo Diriker, director of BEACON, SU’s Business, Economic And Community Outreach Network, who also lives in the City.
The 27-member council of city and county residents; University faculty, students, and staff; SU Alumni and Foundation boards members; Salisbury City and Wicomico County Council members; and representatives of landlord and neighborhood associations has been meeting regularly since last April. The Town-Gown Council has been supportive of campus and community collaborations such as “Live Near Your Work,” “Welcome Back” programs for college students in the fall led by the Chamber of Commerce, and increased contacts between students and area businesses.
