Leon Receives National Scholarship

SALISBURY, MD---Sophomore Spanish major Justiniano Leon Jr. is SU’s second Alpha Sigma Lambda Adult Education Foundation national scholarship recipient in two years. Leon is one of only seven to receive the $1,000 Triangle Club: Second Century scholarship this year.

“There was a lot of competition,” Leon said. “I consider myself a lucky person to be surrounded by many good people and many good friends at SU.”

The former program assistant for SU’s Bilingual Education Department, Leon served as a community liaison for the University with the Hispanic community. While he said he appreciated all SU had done for him, he thanked two specific people for their help in securing the scholarship: Dr. Keith Brower, chair of the Modern Languages Department; and Agata Liszkowska, international student services coordinator.

A national honor society for adult learners in continuing higher education, Alpha Sigma Lambda awards annual scholarships to non-traditional students exhibiting outstanding leadership abilities. Last year’s SU recipient was Joan Mitcheil, who graduated in the spring and returned to SU as a teaching assistant in the English Department this year.
