Lecture examines development in Amazon

SALISBURY, MD ---Dr. Jill Caviglia-Harris, assistant professor of environmental and natural resource economics at Salisbury University, lectures on "Development of the Brazilian Amazon: The Impact of Colonists on Deforestation and Urbanization" on Wednesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room, Guerrieri University Center. Her talk is part of SU's Latin America Lecture Series.

Caviglia-Harris is the principal investigator of a National Science Foundation grant developed to investigate the diffusion of sustainable agriculture in the Brazilian Amazon and analyze how different agricultural techniques impact deforestation in the region. Over the past six years, she has returned to the Amazon to interview local farmers in Brazil and gather data on their farming practices. She has published Sustainable Agriculture in Brazil: Economic Development and Deforestation and various journal articles relating household-level data to economic and environmental policy in this region.
