Indian Musicians Sandip, Sima Burman Perform March 14"

SALISBURY, MD---Tabla maestro Sandip Burman and his sister Sima, a classical vocalist, bring their inimitable song stylings to the Salisbury University stage 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Wicomico Room of Guerrieri University Center.

The tabla are a pair of north Indian drums played with the fingers, palm and heel of the hand. Burman, who began playing at age six in his native India, has since collaborated with the likes of Ravi Shankar, B?la Fleck and the Flecktones on their Grammy award-winning album Outbound and Danny Elfman on the soundtrack for Mars Attacks.

Considered a matchless and inventive performer, Burman, along with his sister and other band members, has played at locations including the Kennedy Center, the House of Blues Chicago and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He has led clinics and taught at institutions such as the Rotterdam Conservatory, Stanford University, Dartmouth College and Brown University.

According to The Washington Post, Burman’s recent “East Meets Jazz” tour revealed him as “nothing if not a catalyst [who] searched for fresh ways to sustain the band’s intense rhythmic drive.”

“Burman seemed to perform the impossible,” said the Chicago Sun-Times, “alternating rapid-fire tabla manipulation with konakul, a vocal percussion, as he played beautifully.”
