Frederick Douglass Library Hosts Dramatic Reading April 28

PRINCESS ANNE, MD---In Honor of National Poetry Month, the Frederick Douglass Library holds a dramatic reading of “A Wreath for Emmett Till” by Marilyn Nelson at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

A collection of 15 sonnets, the book memorializes the slain teen who was lynched in 1955 for whistling at a white woman—a case that helped ignite the Civil Rights movement.

Intricate and beautiful, the tribute celebrates Till’s story and the final justice that was recently reached.

Sonnet readings are performed by UMES students. They are accompanied by an audio interview of the author courtesy of National Public Radio, and DVD selections from a documentary. A collection of historical readings about the case are now available for viewing at the library.
