Family and Homecoming Weekend Scheduled October 24-26
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Office of New Student Experience and Alumni Office have combined resources to create a Family and Homecoming Weekend promising nearly non-stop events, new programs and a weekend calendar like none other before.
The Family and Homecoming Weekend is scheduled Friday-Sunday, October 24-26. Bracketing such things as the traditional football game, tours and reunions are a new parade down the center of campus in which all are invited to participate, a special dinner of recipes submitted by students’ parents and a musical comedy game show for prizes, all overseen by the new Sammy the Sea Gull Bobblehead.
"We have a fun-filled weekend with events planned to satisfy the appetite of all including open classrooms, concerts, an academic festival, a game show where you can win money if you can name that tune, and much more" said Lawanda Dockins-Gordy, director of SU's New Student Experience Program and the Guerrieri University Center.
Some highlights: “Learning Can Be Delicious,” a dinner and lecture series is at 7 p.m. Friday in the Founders’ Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Faculty experts speak on topics ranging from “Shoretrends” to “The Unknown Liberal: Nixon and Civil Rights Policy.” The event is open to students, parents and alumni. Cost is $23.75 per person and seating is limited.
SU student and National Talent Competition Starpower Platinum Medalist Jamie Wallop performs at 8 p.m. Friday in Holloway Hall Auditorium. She released her first rhythm and blues CD, Quite Like You, in February. The Office of Multiethnic Student Services hosts a reception in Holloway Hall’s Social Room following the performance.
At 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday students, family and alumni gather in Caruthers Hall Auditorium for a free showing of the Disney-Pixar film Finding Nemo. Other screenings are 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday.
“Celebrations, Discoveries and Innovations,” an academic festival on the campus side of Henson Science Hall, starts events Saturday with a look at what’s happening at SU’s schools. Presentations include “Solve a Crime in 30 Minutes” with the Clinical Laboratory Science Program, “Terrorism in the Media,” “What Makes the French French?” “Christopher Columbus: A Secret Agent of the Vatican” and “Arts in Education: What Every Young Teacher Should Know (And Be Able To Do).” The festival continues through 11 a.m.
President Janet Dudley-Eshbach hosts a brunch at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Gull’s Nest Eatery at Guerrieri University Center. Admission is $19.95 per adult, $9.95 for children 6-11. The event is open to students, their families and alumni.
Student organizations line Wayne Street and the Intramural Fields with activities and food booths during the Homecoming/Family Weekend Block Party 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. The Student Organization for Activities Planning offers three carnival-like attractions, including an inflatable obstacle course. A beer garden is available to those over 21.
A Homecoming/Family Parade presented by the SU chapter of the NAACP starts at 11:30 a.m. at St. Martin’s Hall and continues down the mall through campus toward Sea Gull Stadium. The public is invited to come see local high school bands, student organization representatives, the Homecoming court and the Baltimore Westsiders Marching Band.
The football team takes on Newport News at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium. The game features the Alumni Pep Band, directed by faculty emeritus Dr. Charles F. Smith Jr. The first 100 fans through the gate wearing SU gear receive a free Sammy the Sea Gull Bobblehead. The new Bobbleheads are available for $10 each in the Alumni Tent at the stadium.
Highlights continue from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Rotunda and Bistro at the Commons with a Recipes From Home Dinner. The meal features winning recipes submitted by parents of SU students, along with karaoke, prizes and face painting. Admission is $8.50 for adults, $4.95 for children ages 6-12 and $7.65 for seniors age 65 and over. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The event is open to students, their families and alumni.
SU presents “Tune In,” a musical comedy game show, at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Students, their families and alumni could win up to $500. Admission is $1 per person, benefiting a 50/50 raffle and the Danny Landsman Memorial Fund.
